Want to install your new impulse switch but aren't an electrical expert? Check out our One-Elec guide! Tips for avoiding the most common mistakes, step-by-step instructions... we tell you everything you need to know about impulse switches and how to install them easily and safely!
What is an impulse switch?
An impulse switch is an electrical device that allows you to turn a light on and off from different push buttons. We've all heard of this type of mechanism before, haven't we? Indeed, the principle of a two-way switch is very similar. So what is the difference between the two? It's very simple:
- The two-way switch is limited to two control points
- The impulse switch allows you to integrate an unlimited number
It is therefore better to opt for the impulse switch for a complex installation (long corridors, staircases, areas requiring centralised lighting, etc.) as it allows for greater flexibility!
How the impulse switch works
The impulse switch is located in the electrical panel. It separates the control circuit (push buttons) from the power circuit (lamps). How exactly does it work? Once activated, the push button sends an electrical impulse to the impulse switch. This changes the state of the circuit
- Open circuit: the lighting turns off.
- Closed circuit: the lighting turns on.
This mechanism complies with the NF C 15-100 standard. This standard guarantees a safe and durable installation. It is important to note that an impulse switch can manage up to 15 light points with indicator lights. They are therefore extremely useful for residential properties and commercial spaces (offices, shops, etc.).
The advantages of impulse switch
1. Versatility and scalability
Impulse switches have the unique feature of being able to evolve with your needs. It is very easy to add or move push buttons without modifying your entire electrical installation, which is a real advantage!
2. Centralised organisation
By grouping the controls in an electrical panel, it simplifies wiring and reduces clutter.
3. Adaptability
Here are the different types of impulse switches:
- Single-pole: controls only the phase.
- Bipolar: controls both the phase and the neutral, for enhanced safety.
- Silent: ideal for bedrooms or noise-sensitive environments.
- Modular: mounted on a DIN rail, convenient for standard installations.
Types of impulse switches and how they work
There are two types of impulse switches.
1. Electromechanical impulse switch
How it works: it uses an electromagnet to change the state of the circuit (open/closed) when a push button is activated.
- Advantages: very robust, reliable and durable, even in demanding environments.
- Disadvantages: noticeable noise when activated, unsuitable for quiet environments.
2. Electronic impulse switch
Operation: this model relies on electronic components (transistors) for silent operation and advanced options (time delay, current detection).
- Advantages: perfect for residential spaces, versatile with additional features.
- Disadvantages: higher cost and more complex maintenance.
How to connect an impulse switch? Step-by-step guide
To connect your impulse switch, you will need the appropriate equipment:
- Impulse switch suitable for your installation (electromechanical or electronic).
- Push buttons to control the circuit (References S520206 / S520216 / LEG600008…)
- Electrical conductors that comply with current standards.
- Insulated screwdrivers and wire strippers.
- An electrical panel with a suitable circuit breaker.
- A multimeter to check the connections.
Tip: Always check that the power is off before working on your electrical circuit.
Step 1: Preparation
- Turn off the power at the main switchboard.
- Prepare the necessary equipment
- Identify the cables: live, neutral, earth.
Step 2: Connecting the impulse switch
- Control circuit (push buttons): Connect the push buttons to the impulse switch, using the specified terminals.
- Power circuit (lights): Install the lights by connecting them to the impulse switch, ensuring that the phase and neutral cables are connected correctly.
Step 3: Test that your installation is working properly
- Turn the power back on.
- Check that the lighting is working correctly by pressing the push buttons
Can you hear a strange noise or feel abnormal heat? Check the connections or call a professional.
Common mistakes to avoid during installation
- Terminal connection error: Check that each wire is connected to the correct terminal on the impulse switch. Reversing the connection could damage the device.
- Inappropriate cable cross-section: Use cables with a sufficient cross-section to prevent overheating or loss of performance.
- Failure to comply with safety standards: Ensure that your installation complies with the NF C 15-100 standard.
- No dedicated circuit breaker: Protect the circuit with a circuit breaker suitable for the power of the lighting.
How to check if the impulse switch is correctly installed
To check that your installation is successful, follow these steps:
- Check the continuity of the circuit with a multimeter.
- Test all push buttons to ensure that they control the lighting without failure.
- Observe the behaviour of the light: it should turn off and on instantly without flickering.
Safety standards to be observed
When carrying out any electrical work, follow these instructions:
- Switch off the power supply before working.
- Wear protective equipment (insulated gloves).
- Observe the safety distances in the electrical panel.
- Ensure that all connections are securely fastened and properly insulated.
